Presbyterians and Baptism
One of the most important memories of any parent or grandparent is the baptism of their child and grandchild. Baptism is one of our oldest and most important sacraments and symbols of the Christian Faith. Presbyterians follow an important tradition of baptizing infants because of their parents’ faith and the church’s acceptance of them into the family of God. We also believe that if a parent wishes to wait for their child to grow up and make this decision for themselves that this is also scriptural, and we fully support that decision.
If you wish to have your child baptized at our church the first step is to contact our pastor, Steve Locke, to make an appointment to talk about the meaning of baptism, why you want your child to be baptized, and times that might be available.
Things to consider about your child’s baptism: Because we believe that baptism is a symbol of joining the family of God then you as a parent or grandparent need to be related to a church so that the child will have the benefit of hearing the good news of Jesus Christ. When a child is presented for baptism it is the parents’ and grandparents’ faith that supports the reasons behind the baptism. It is not the child’s faith that is proclaimed but the parents’. When a child is baptized it does not confirm their eternal security with God. Baptism brings the child into the family of God in the hope that in hearing the good news they will believe and develop a relationship with Jesus Christ. Nurture and hope are the ingredients to a child’s life in the church. Our responsibility is to help parents and grandparents develop the spiritual life of the child.
