Study Group

This study group, Liberating Community: The Principles of Liberation Theology and How They Apply to Our "Here and Now", invites members of our congregation to explore one of the most influential theological movements of the 20th century: Latin American Liberation Theology (LALT). Because this school of thought addresses complex social, economic, and political issues, it often differs from more traditional approaches. Our posture will be respectful, critical, and faithful as we seek to understand LALT’s core principles through a lens firmly grounded in Scripture and Christian tradition.

We will explore its unique way of “doing church” and look at how it serves as a prime example of Contextual Theology—the practice of reflecting on the universal truths of the Gospel and applying them faithfully within specific cultural, historical, and socio-economic contexts. We will read with charity, aiming to understand each author’s intent, and discuss the principles of liberation theology with clarity, honesty, and care.

Our sessions will focus on shared theological reflection rather than debate. Together, we will aim to deepen our devotion to God, enhance our understanding of Scripture, and broaden our awareness of the global Church's diversity. All discussions will occur in an atmosphere of mutual respect, embodying Christian love and honoring the sincere faith that supports genuine theological inquiry.

Join us as we explore the rich tradition of Contextual Theology through the lens of Liberation Theology, asking how this way of “doing church” in the 21st century can sharpen our understanding of the Gospel’s power and relevance in today’s world.
